Physical Methods of Microalgal Biomass Pretreatment

Abstract: The prospect of depletion of natural energy resources on the Earth forces researchers to seek and explore new and alternative energy sources. Biomass is a composite resource that can be used in many ways leading to diversity of products. Therefore, microalgal biomass offers great potential. The main aim of this study is to find the best physical method of microalgal biomass pretreatment that guarantees efficient lipid extraction. These studies identifies biochemical composition of microalgal biomass as source … Show more

“…Cheng et al [32] reported that the maximum biomass concentration of C. protothecoides after 11-day cultivation in proteose medium was about 0.8 g L −1 under conditions of 12/12 on/off light cycle and 200 μmol/m 2 radiation. Also, Piasecka and Krzemińska [33] reported in their investigation that C. protothecoides was shown to produce 0.95 g L −1 on Polytoma medium in photoheterotrophic growth conditions under the 16/8 light/dark cycle.…”

“…In recent times, significant development of modern extraction techniques such as ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE), microwave assisted extraction, enzyme assisted extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction have emerged (Barba et al, 2015;Khoddami, et al, 2013;Krishnaswamy et al, 2013;Miron et al, 2013, Piasecka et al, 2014Puri et al, 2012). Ultrasound assisted extraction has numerous advantages, primarily because of the equipment flexibility, easy handling, and cost effectiveness in combination with a shorter treatment time, reduction of temperatures, high reproducibility, improvement in mass transfer, and the eco-friendly approach (Barba et al, 2014b;Brnčić et al, 2009).…”
