Abstract. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the static properties of a single linear multiblock copolymer chain under poor solvent conditions varying the block length N , the number of blocks n, and the solvent quality by variation of the temperature T . We study the most symmetrical case, where the number of blocks of monomers of type A, n A , equals that of monomers B, n B (n A = n B = n/2), the length of all blocks is the same irrespective of their type, and potential parameters are also chosen symmetrically, as for a standard Lennard-Jones fluid. Under poor solvent conditions the chains collapse and blocks with monomers of the same type form clusters, which are phase separated from the clusters with monomers of the other type. We study the dependence of the size of the formed clusters on n, N and T . Furthermore, we discuss our results with respect to recent simulation data on the phase behaviour of such macromolecules, providing a complete picture for the cluster formations in single multiblock copolymer chains under poor solvent conditions.

We report Monte Carlo simulations of a lattice-polymer model that can account for both polymer crystallization and liquid-liquid demixing in solutions of semiflexible homopolymers. In our model, neighboring polymer segments can have isotropic interactions that affect demixing, and anisotropic interactions that are responsible for freezing. However, our simulations show that the isotropic interactions also have a noticeable effect on the freezing curve, as do the anisotropic interactions on demixing. As the relative strength of the isotropic interactions is reduced, the liquid-liquid demixing transition disappears below the freezing curve. A simple extended Flory-Huggins theory accounts quite well for the phase behavior observed in the simulations.

Intermingled Network of Syndiotactic Polystyrene/Poly(3-hexylthiophene)

By taking advantage of the fiber forming properties of both polymers in p-xylene, syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) are mixed at an elevated temperature to prepare a composite network. These sPS–P3HT networks have been intensively investigated by UV–vis absorption, FTIR, and DSC; their morphologies by FE-SEM and FEG-TEM; and the molecular structure of the P3HT chains by neutron scattering experiments, rheology, and conductivity. Absorption measurements indicate the occurrence of π–π interaction between the P3HT chains and the sPS phenyl groups. Investigations by FESEM, TEM, and AFM show the formation of an intermingled network of sPS fibrils and P3HT ribbons. Small-angle neutron scattering studies reveal that a fraction of P3HT molecules is possibly encapsulated within the sPS fibrils. The increase of the elastic modulus with increasing P3HT content together with the increase of electrical conductivity is likely related to these encapsulated chains.
