Physical Fitness Testing and Screening Reveal a Gateway to Identify Locomotive Disorders: Retrospective Study of a Japanese Elementary School Population

Abstract: This retrospective epidemiological study investigated the relationship between physical fitness testing and locomotive disorder screening results among elementary school children in Japan. The test and screening results of 1033 children from a single elementary school between 2016 and 2018 were examined. Multiple regression analysis was performed for each gender of children of grades third and fourth to generate receiver-operating characteristic curves. Of the 69 children with parent-identified locomotor probl… Show more

“…6,8,44,45 Results highlight that regular motor coordination and cardiorespiratory fitness screening programs in schools must be implemented and integrated into existing health programs. 46 A potential limitation of this study is that we used a convenience sample and a sample size calculation was not performed. Additionally, the cross-sectional study design does not allow for the establishment of a true causal relationship.…”

“…The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the results of physical fitness tests and those of locomotor examinations and to investigate the possibility of early detection of locomotor disorders in children. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to carefully monitor the condition of children's locomotive organs and provide appropriate and safe exercise programs (16,18,19,21).…”

“…Therefore, beginning in 2016, parents in Japan were asked to complete a screening questionnaire to check for potential locomotor disorders in children enrolled in compulsory education schools. This initiative aimed to enable early detection of locomotor disorders in children, corresponding to the bone and joint decade movement (16,18,19). However, parental screening has been considered insufficient in identifying all potential disorders, posing a challenge.…”
