Physical Fitness Response of Wii Training in Egyptian Children With T1dm

Abstract: Background:-Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a form of diabetes caused by autoimmune damage of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas which leads to hyperglycemia. It often occurs in childhood. Methods:-Thirty Egyptian children suffering from T1DM participated in this study. Their age ranged from 11 to 15 years. Glycosylated hemoglobin, blood glucose (fasting and postprandial), insulin intake and Physical Fitness Index were measured before and after Wii aerobic training. The Wii aer… Show more

“…Gonzales et al [ 32 ] established that tele-rehabilitation through 10 modified breathing exercise protocols for a week in the acute condition of COVID-19 improved the exercise capacity assessed by 6MWT in the study group compared to the control group. Rodríguez et al [ 29 ] disclosed that using breathing exercise or strengthening exercises for 2 weeks significantly improved the dysnea and physical state of COVID-19 patients when compared to no intervention on the evaluation of a 6-min walk test in favor of breathing exercises.…”

“…The patients performed the test as much as they tolerated, but not more than 5 min, and each patient's time was recorded. After test completion, the heart rate recovery numbers 1, 2, and 3 were recorded [ 29 ]. PFI was calculated by the following equation: …”

“…Earlier studies could not validate the effect of virtual reality programs on HbA1c levels, though two studies included game interventions [33,34]. In the study that employed an immersive virtual reality program for 12 weeks [13], a study that administered a 12-week program using Kinect [19], and a study that administered a 12-week program using Nintendo Wii [20], HbA1c levels were significantly reduced due to the experimental intervention; however, these were non-randomized trials. Therefore, in order to confirm the effect of the virtual reality program on HbA1c levels, strict experimental studies will be needed in the future.…”

“…Virtual reality programs are provided through various methods such as Kinect [19], Nintendo Wii [20], immersive virtual reality environment [21,22], wearable sensor and real time visual feedback [23]. These programs have shown a significant decrease in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels [19,20], and a significant increase in body function [23] and physical activity [21,22] for individuals with diabetes. Therefore, virtual reality is a suitable treatment method for controlling blood sugar levels and improving physical function in individuals with diabetes.…”
