Physical exercise reduces synthesis of ADMA SDMA and L-Arg

Abstract: Increased levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) and low plasma level of L-arginine (L-ARG) are all conditions likely to decrease nitric oxide (NO) production. Aim of this study is to evaluate ADMA, SDMA, and L-ARG plasmatic levels before and after physical exercise in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). We studied 30 patient with mean age 52 + 4.5 years. After inclusion in the study, before the execution of physical exercise, heparinized blood sample was drawn… Show more

“…As ADMA functions as an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase, high plasma ADMA levels are considered as a cardiovascular risk factor [59] and an increased urinary excretion seems to be one of the main mechanisms lowering ADMA plasma levels [60]. Recently, it was shown that physical exercise decreases ADMA levels in plasma [61]. However, the effect of exercise on urinary ADMA excretion in healthy individuals has rarely been examined so far.…”

“…Additionally, arginine is a glucogenic amino acid that contributes to gluconeogenesis. Prolonged and strenuous exercise decreases asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) [31], one of the substrates for citrulline synthesis.…”

“…ADMA is an inhibitor of NO synthase (NOS) and a key enzyme for NO production [52,53,54,55]. SDMA is indirectly inhibiting NOS [13,17,55]. NO is the most potent vasorelaxant agent [17,56,57,58] with strong anti-atherogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic action [17,55,58].…”

Eighty percent of ADMA is degraded by dimethylarginine dimethylamonohydrolase (DDAH), enzyme which is very active in kidney and liver [13,59], and 20% of ADMA in excreted by kidneys [17,52].…”
