Introduction and Objective. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory and systemic autoimmune disease that affects peripheral joints leading to joint degradation, pain, deformities, decreased activities of daily living, and sedentary lifestyle, resulting in secondary sarcopenia. Osteoarthritis (OA), in turn, is a multifactorial disease associated with joint degeneration and impairment of the musculoskeletal system as a whole, affecting joint movement and stability. In both pathologies, there is loss of muscle mass and functional impairment, and physical exercise is a therapeutic alternative to minimize these consequences. The aim of the review is to demonstrate the effects of different physical exercise modalities on muscle mass loss in murine models of OA and RA. Materials and method. The databases used were PUBMED, EMBASE, Cochrane Database, LILACS, and Google Scholar. The review included studies which induced experimental models of OA or RA in rats or mice; used any exercise modality as an intervention; and analyzed some quantitative muscle histomorphometric measurs. The search strategy included all keywords on the topic identified in previous research and adapted for each database. Studies published in any language and in any year were included. An analysis of the studies was performed by two independent reviewers and data were extracted from the articles using tools developed by the reviewers. Results. After completing the definitive search in the databases, 193 studies were found, of which only 2 were included in this review, one addressing the effects of resistance exercise in rats with RA, and another using aerobic exercise to treat rats with OA. Conclusion.Treatment with different forms of physical exercise contributed to attenuation of muscle mass loss in animal models of OA and RA.

Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is classified as an autoimmune, chronic disease affecting diarthrodial joints and periarticular structures. Objective: To evaluate whether low-intensity laser treatment (LLLT) and/or exercise reduce the deleterious effects of tissue in a rheumatoid arthritis model. Methods: 128 rats were divided into two inflammatory periods: acute (7 days) and chronic (28 days) and subdivided into control, injury and treatment. The protocol with Freund's Complete Adjuvant was used in two inoculations, one intradermal and one intraarticular in the tibiofemoral joint, the control animals received saline solution. For treatment, LLLT 660 nm, 5 J/cm² was used in the sensitized joint and climbing exercise in stairways with an overload of 100 grams. After the experimental period, the animals were euthanized and the joints were prepared for morphometric analysis of the total thickness, superficial, deep, and cellular density of the articular cartilage. Generalized Linear Models with Sidak post-test were chosen. Results: The control group was found to be different from the lesion group with greater joint cartilage thickness, and the animals treated with exercise alone increased the joint cartilage compared to the control group. Conclusion: The animals treated with laser association and exercise showed improvement in the morphometric aspects of the articular cartilage.

Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory and autoimmune disorder that is characterized by joint inflammation, pain, physical disability, and morning stiffness. In the present study, the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on RA was reviewed. Methods: "Low-level laser therapy", "rheumatoid arthritis disease", and "photobiomodulation" keywords were searched in Google Scholar, PubMed, and Medline. Results: A literature survey led to a discussion about the immunology of the RA, laser therapy, mechanism of LLLT action, and anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties of LLLT. Conclusion: It was concluded that LLLT could improve RA patients’ quality of life, reduce pain, and enhance physical movement.
