Physical conditions in the dwarf local irregular galaxy IC 10

Abstract: A detailed analysis of the physical conditions of the Interstellar Medium in the main body of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 10 is carried out using long-slit spectroscopy. Maps of the excitation, the Hα flux, [NII]/Hα and [SII]/Hα are presented. The Diffuse Ionized Gas inside the galaxy is studied. We found that the spectral characteristics are not similar to those of spiral galaxies: the values of the ratios [NII]/Hα and [SII]/Hα are not as large as in spiral galaxies but the excitation is much la… Show more

“…Still, our results for the clump depth, between 0.75 to 0.90, imply that a significant fraction of ionizing photons is able to escape the clumps. Such results are compatible with the investigation performed by Hidalgo-Gámez (2005), that shows that the photons leaking from H ii regions, in addition to the ionisation provided by the WR stars, are responsable for the extended diffuse ionised gas in IC 10. This has implication for the PDRs, which are the neutral zones bordering only the radiationbounded clouds.…”

“…Supernova remnants and winds from WR stars have been identified as the main driver of the gas kinematics (Thurow & Wilcots 2005). The hard radiation from the WR stars, together with photons leaking from the H ii regions, are the sources of such extended ionised gas emission (Hidalgo-Gámez 2005).…”

“…On the other hand, the DIG properties of irregular galaxies are not known very well, as very few galaxies have been studied so far. This small amount of data has prevented us from making any conclusions about their spectral characteristics (Martin 1997;Hidalgo-Gámez 2005;Hidalgo-Gámez & Peimbert 2006). However, these data show that the line ratios differ from those in spiral galaxies.…”
