Physical, chemical and biological properties of micro‐arc deposited calcium phosphate coatings on titanium and zirconium‐niobium alloy

Abstract: A comparative investigation of the physical, chemical and biological properties of micro‐arc deposited calcium phosphate coatings on titanium and zirconium‐niobium substrates was performed. Calcium phosphate coatings on titanium have a higher surface density, porosity and pore size, and a more homogeneous surface topography. Under the same conditions, calcium phosphate coatings on zirconium‐niobium have a relief topography, but their surface density, porosity and pore size were all smaller. X‐ray diffraction o… Show more

“…The average roughness (Ra) of the samples was 0.3-0.5 µm. In order to realize the MAO method for deposition of coatings, the Micro-Arc 3.0 installation was used as in the previous works [32][33][34]. The installation consists of pulsed power source, galvanic bath with water cooling system, molybdenum electrodes, and personal computer with Micro-Arc 3.0 software for the MAO process controlling.…”

“…Usually, researchers [21,22,28,29] carry out the MAO process using a potentiodynamic regime with the constant current density. In presented work, the CaP coating deposition was carried out using the anode potentiostatic regime under the fixed voltages [32][33][34]. In this case, the current density decreased during the MAO process due to the growth of dielectric CaP coatings as shown in Figure 2.…”

“…Unfortunately, Zr alloys as well as other bioinert metals and alloys show low binding between implant and bone tissue in early stages of osseointegration. This problem can be solved by the surface treatment and deposition of bioactive coatings [7,8].…”
