Physical, biogeochemical and ecological impacts of giant icebergs: a multidisciplinary study of iceberg A68 near South Georgia, Southern Ocean  

Abstract: <p>Giant icebergs can greatly impact the mass, freshwater and nutrient budgets of the ocean. They can deposit large amounts of freshwater at great distances from their origins, impacting upper-ocean stratification and mixing, and they can be important vectors for micronutrient delivery with impacts on primary production and carbon drawdown. Our closest corresponding 8‐day mean SSS value is 20.4 ± 7.3 psu (−13.6 psu anomaly), for the grid cell centered at 56.125°S, 33.125°W; the glider measurement falls within the margin of error for our SMAP value, despite the substantial differences in instrumental resolution and measurement depth.…”
