Physical and thermal properties of a chitosan/alginate nanolayered PET film

Abstract: Nanolaminates have been reported to have applications in different areas, such as the preparation of multilayer films, coating biomedical appliances or multilayer edible coatings with enhanced properties for applications in the food industry. This work aims at characterizing the surface properties, water vapor permeability, and thermal and mechanical properties of a nanolayered film. The film was produced using two polysaccharides with opposite charges, chitosan and sodium alginate deposited on to aminolyzed/c… Show more

“…These nanolayered coatings exhibited lower WVP and oxygen permeability (O2P) values ) when compared with those obtained for conventional edible films composed of chitosan (Fajardo et al, 2010) and of ι-carrageenan (Hambleton, Debeaufort, Beney, Karbowiak, & Voilley, 2008) -see Table 5. Also, the κ-carrageenan/chitosan nanolayered coating showed a WVP value which was very similar to that obtained for an alginate/chitosan (Carneiro-da-Cunha et al, 2010) and κ-carrageenan/lysozyme nanolayered coating (see Table 5). …”

“…The samples were randomly divided into two groups (control and test), four pieces of each mango by group, totaling 200 pieces per group. Coating solutions (Alg and Ch) were applied on the test group by the layer-by-layer technique as described by Carneiro-da-Cunha et al (2010); no coating was applied to the control group. Layer-by-layer technique consisted in the deposition of multiple nanolayers of Alg and Ch in fresh-cut mangoes surface.…”

“…Chitosan has been found to be non-toxic, biodegradable, biofunctional, biocompatible and has promising application prospect in the biomedical and food fields. [6][7][8][9] Chitosan films have been successfully used as a packaging material for the quality preservation of a variety of foods. 10 But water vapour sensitivity and poor mechanical CHINESE PACKAGING INSTITUTE -2014 CONFERENCE of 16 scans was recorded.…”
