Physical and Mechanical Property Characterization of Hemp Shive Reinforced Gypsum Composite Board

Abstract: Known and used since Antiquity, the hemp plant comes back to the attention of the researchers focused on making new ecological products used to reduce the environmental impact in the construction sector. A sustainable building environment needs to develop relations with renewable raw materials. This study aims to make an investigation in the products based on gypsum and hemp shives, where hemp shives are an agricultural plant and gypsum a natural resource produced by burning gypsum plaster. Using the multicrit… Show more

“…Low swelling and low soaking susceptibility were two characteristics of hemp fiber boards that contributed to their comparatively strong water resistance. Fernea et al (2017) [ 66 ] developed gypsum and hemp-based products. The findings indicate that the insulating materials had the best acoustic absorption and thermal conductivity as hemp volume increases.…”

“…23 Their observations revealed that the composites utilizing Diss fibers exhibit a greater flexural strength compared to those incorporating Alfa fibers. Fernea et al 24 Exploring the effect of increasing hemp fiber content in defective composites in terms of mechanical properties, it was observed that with an increase in fiber content, the compressive and bending strength of the composites decreases.…”

“…This research implements the principles of sustainability, creating increasingly excellent solutions without harming the environment [5,6]. The vital topic is the production of board insulation materials, with an emphasis on the efficient use of local production by-products and rapidly renewable natural resources [7]. Lignocellulosic materials are made from material particles/fractions of different sizes and orientations, varying different glues, glue volumes and pressing technologies, obtaining boards of different thicknesses and products and rapidly renewable natural resources [7].…”
