Physical and Mechanical Properties of Oriented Strand Board from Three Species of Plantation Forests at Various Resin Contents

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the physical and mechanical properties of oriented strand board (OSB) from three wood species of plantation forests, i.e., Afrika (Maesopsis eminii), mangium (Acacia mangium), and sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) at various resin contents. OSB was made with a shelling ratio (face:core:back) of 1:2:1 and a target density of 0.6 g/cm3. Methylene diphenyl di-isocyanate (MDI) adhesive was used with 3%, 5%, and 7% resin contents. The physical and mechanical properties … Show more

“…Penggunaan bambu saat ini sangat banyak digunakan dalam produk komposit sebagai konstruksi bangunan. Bambu memilki sifat yang tidak jauh berbeda dengan kayu dan bambu memiliki kekuatan tarik yang tinggi (Baskara et al, 2022); (Febrianto et al, 2017). Sementara pelepah aren memiliki serat partikel yang dapat diolah menjadi komposit.…”

“…For example, Hadi et al (2021) studied polystyrene-impregnated glulam made from tropical wood species and found mechanical properties such as MOE and MOR to be inferior, which means they did not meet the required standards. Baskara et al (2022) tested OSB made from the tropical fast species Paraserianthes falcataria, Maesopsis eminii, and A. mangium. It was found that with sufficient isocyanate resin as the binder for OSB, most of the physical and mechanical properties did meet the standard.…”

“…The lower research result compared to previous studies of other bamboo strip products is presumably due to the differences between glue spread and processing methods. A study by Bamboo species Modulus of Elasticity (MPa) Baskara et al (2022) reported that the higher resin content could increase the MOE value. Therefore, the adhesive penetrating flattened bamboo should have more glue spread than a board with bamboo strip and BOSB.…”
