UDC 621.928.93The aerodynamic characteristics and the structure of vortices of the central region of the channel system of an eightchannel centrifugal fi lter have been investigated. An overview of the foreign and home literature on the fi ltration of solid particles in the gas fl ow in centrifugal apparatuses is given [1,2]. We present the design and the principle of operation of the eight-channel centrifugal fi lter based on a system of curvilinear channels with equal turn angles and equal cross-sectional areas connected in series. We have performed numerical calculations of the dependence of the aerodynamic drag of the centrifugal fi lter on the rate of fl ow obtained by three different methods: analytical calculation, experiments on the laboratory facility, and with the help of modern means of computer modeling. Computational modeling of the fl ow was carried out by solving Reynolds (RANS, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) equations by the SFD method with the use of a k-ε model of turbulence for three modes of operation of the apparatus. The results of computer modeling permitted visualizing the vortex structure of the central region of the separation chamber in the form of 3D graphs. The obtained results have been confi rmed experimentally on a laboratory model of the centrifugal fi lter of capacity up to 200 m 3 /h of purifi ed air.Introduction. In many branches of industry, for the fi rst stage of cleaning process gases of solid particles, cyclone dust collectors, the principle of whose operation is based on the action of the centrifugal force of the fl ow swirled inside the apparatuses, are used [3][4][5]. Cyclone dust collectors are simple in design and reliable in operation. They have been widely used in the past 150 years. In these years, the world has seen hundreds of designs and thousands of their modifi cations. However, the sharp decrease in the effi ciency of cleaning gas fl ows of solid particles in the given apparatuses [6] makes it impossible to use them as the only step of cleaning in systems with a high initial dust content of fi ne-grained particles. A high effi ciency of freeing the gas fl ow from solid particles can be attained by combining two principles of cleaning in one apparatus: centrifugal separation and multiple fi ltration through a self-generated dynamic dust layer [7].The processes proceeding in the channel system with closed loops have been investigated by the following researchers: A. I. Burov, A. A. Burov, D. A. Serebryanskii, I. Yakshtonene,. However, the problems of predicting and calculating the aerodynamic drag of the centrifugal fi lter have not been investigated well enough to decide on the choice of draught equipment. The aim of the present work is to determine the aerodynamic drag of an eight-channel centrifugal fi lter. To achieve this aim, it is necessary to perform numerical CFD calculations and carry out experimental investigations under laboratory conditions on a model of an apparatus with an air cleaning capacity of 200 m 3 /h.
