Physical Activity and Mortality in Chronic Kidney Disease (NHANES III)

Abstract: Physical inactivity is associated with increased mortality in CKD and non-CKD populations. As in the non-CKD population, increased physical activity might have a survival benefit in the CKD population.

“…To our knowledge, this is the first study to report on PA level and CV and all-cause mortality in these patients. This is consistent with earlier findings in dialysis, CKD, and the general population (8,9,31). Furthermore, it shows low levels of PA are positively associated with CVD risk factors in RTRs.…”

“…Several factors, including aging, genetic and environmental factors, and Western lifestyle that includes a high calorie diet and sedentary lifestyle, contribute to the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Low physical activity levels are common in those patients with CKD and are associated with death in the CKD population (33)(34)(35). Although available data support adopting exercise and intentional weight loss in this population, the quality of the available evidence on this topic is suboptimal (36,37).…”

“…Patients with ESRD are characterized by low levels of physical activity associated with mobility limitations [2]. Furthermore, observational studies have revealed that physical inactivity is linked to increased early mortality in these patients [3]. Individuals with ESRD initially undergo medical treatment but often eventually require dialysis [4,5].…”
