Phylogeography unplugged: comparative surveys in the genomic era

Abstract: ABSTRACT.-In March 2012, the authors met at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) in Durham, North Carolina, USA, to discuss approaches and cooperative ventures in Indo-Pacific phylogeography. The group emerged with a series of findings: (1) Marine population structure is complex, but single locus mtDNA studies continue to provide powerful first assessment of phylogeographic patterns. (2) These patterns gain greater significance/power when resolved in a diversity of taxa. New analytical tools ar… Show more

“…For example, studies within the coral triangle tend not to include other regions, and conversely geographically extensive studies tend not to include locations within the coral triangle. both Keyse et al (2014) andbowen et al (2014) stress the importance of research coordination and collaboration among laboratories to the advancement of Indo-Pacific marine science. Willette et al (2014a) complete this first trio of syntheses by looking forward to the application of massively parallel sequencing technologies to science and resource management in the Indo-Pacific region.…”

“…Furthermore, results for each species were considered within the context of genetic patterns found across their broader sampled ranges. This represents the first such attempt to cross--infer comparative spatial genetic patterns using the broader "genetic--background" as a reference (Chapter Three, Bowen et al 2014). We find that the processes inferred to have influenced the spatial genetic patterns of species differed according to the extent of the species range that was included in the analysis.…”

“…For example, Bowen et al (2014) suggest a progressive research program, whereby comparative genetic surveys of multiple species based on mtDNA or a few loci are used to identify questions, locations and species of interest, which can then be pursued using targeted population genomic investigations. Thus, although the data used within this thesis is restricted to mtDNA, it sets the stage for follow up studies using NGS methods.…”
