Phylogeny of Vitaceae based on the nuclearGAI1gene sequencesThis article is one of a selection of papers presented at the symposium onVitisat the XVII International Botanical Congress held in Vienna, Austria, in 2005.

Abstract: Phylogenetic analysis of 105 nuclear GAI1 sequences of Vitaceae provided a fairly robust phylogeny, largely congruent with the recently published chloroplast data of the family. In the GAI1 phylogeny, Cayratia Juss., Tetrastigma (Miq.) Planch., and Cyphostemma (Planch.) Alston form a clade. Cyphostemma and Tetrastigma are both monophyletic, and Cayratia is paraphyletic. Ampelopsis Michx is paraphyletic with the African Rhoicissus Planch. and the South American Cissus striata Ruiz & Pav. and its close relatives… Show more

“…The monophyly of Tetrastigma has been supported by previous molecular studies of Vitaceae with limited sampling of Tetrastigma (Ingrouille et al, 2002; Rossetto et al, 2002, 2007; Soejima and Wen, 2006; Wen et al, 2007, 2013; Ren et al, 2011; Trias-Blasi et al, 2012; Zhang et al, 2015b; Lu et al, in press). Lu et al (2013), in particular, reconstructed the phylogeny and biogeography of Cayratia Juss.…”

“…sylvestris , is the wild ancestor of the domesticated grapevine V. v. vinifera [1,2], cultivated for wine and table grape production [3]. The genus Vitis , a monophyletic taxon of the family Vitaceae [4,5], includes approximately sixty species present mainly in Asia and America, all of which -except the domesticated grapevine- are dioecious (male and female flowers borne on different plants) [6,7]. During grapevine domestication, flower reproductive morphology has incurred radical modifications, with the change from dioecy to hermaphroditism in domesticated grapevines [8].…”

“…and North and Central America (3 spp.). Recent phylogenetic analyses based on plastid or nuclear sequences revealed that there are at least two disjunctions between the New and the Old World in the genus [28,29]. More interestingly, both chloroplast and nuclear data clearly suggested that the African Rhoicissus Planch.…”
