Phylogeny of the tribe Indigofereae (Leguminosae–Papilionoideae): Geographically structured more in succulent‐rich and temperate settings than in grass‐rich environments

Abstract: This analysis goes beyond many phylogenies in exploring how phylogenetic structure imposed by morphology, ecology, and geography reveals useful evolutionary data. A comprehensive range of such diversity is evaluated within tribe Indigofereae and outgroups from sister tribes. A combined data set of 321 taxa (over one-third of the tribe) by 80 morphological characters, 833 aligned nuclear ribosomal ITS/5.8S sites, and an indel data set of 33 characters was subjected to parsimony analysis. Notable results include… Show more

“…-Indigofereae is a pantropical, mainly woody tribe, with extensions into the subtropics and the Mediterranean-type Fynbos biome of southern Africa. It is placed as sister to the Millettioid group (Hu & al., 2000;Kajita & al., 2001) and has been well characterised in studies by Schrire and collaborators (see Schrire & al., 2009). The Indigofereae is strongly supported as monophyletic with the novel finding that the monospecific Madagascan Disynstemon R.…”

“…The Indigofereae is strongly supported as monophyletic with the novel finding that the monospecific Madagascan Disynstemon R. Vig., previously placed in tribe Millettieae, is sister to the tribe (Schrire & al., 2009). With insufficient apomorphies to expand the circumscription of Indigofereae to include this genus, Schrire & al. maintain it as part of a basal grade, together with Xeroderris Roberty, Dalbergiella Baker f., Platycyamus Benth.…”

“…We sequenced 29 accessions of C. mathewsii (Table S2), collected from diverse locations in Mantaro (9 accessions), Apurimac (9 accessions), Marañon (5 accessions), and Loja (6 accessions) for the ITS region, including the 5.8S subunit, according to methods of Schrire et al (35). To assess the monophyly of C. mathewsii and to ensure that age estimation was not biased by inadequate sampling of related taxa (cf.…”

“…I. hendecaphylla, I. linnaei, I. lespedezioides, I. spicata, and I. volkensii are relatively closely phylogenetically aligned within the Tethyan Clade, whereas I. vicioides is distinct within the Pantropical clade [19].…”
