Phylogeny and Mycotoxin Profile of Pathogenic Fusarium Species Isolated from Sudden Decline Syndrome and Leaf Wilt Symptoms on Date Palms (Phoenix dactylifera) in Tunisia

Abstract: In 2017–2018, extensive symptoms of sudden decline and fruit rot were observed on date palms in southern Tunisia. Samples of diseased plants were randomly collected in six localities. Based on morphological identification, Fusarium was the most frequent fungal genus detected. A sequencing of translation elongation factor, calmodulin, and second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II genes was used to identify 63 representative Fusarium strains at species level and investigate their phylogenetic relationships. Th… Show more

“…Isolates of F. brachygibbosum were reported to be able to produce different mycotoxins: For instance, isolates from date palms affected by quick sudden syndrome symptoms produced low levels of beauvericin A, T‐2 and HT‐2 toxins (Rabaaoui et al., 2021), whereas isolates from Trifolium subterraneum produced low levels of fusarenone‐X and some type A trichothecene derivatives (Tan et al., 2011).…”

“…Fumonisins determination was performed according to our previous well-established protocol ( Dall’Asta et al, 2012 ), further adapted over time following instrumental advances, and recently described in Rabaaoui et al (2021) . Briefly, 2g of ground maize sample was mixed with 8ml of water: methanol (30:70, v/v) in an Ultraturrax T25 high-speed blender (IKA, Stauffen, Germany) at 6,000rpm for 3min.…”

“…Mycotoxin production was detected and reported at high rates of F. proliferatum in Saudi Arabia. Those species tested positive for various dangerous gene sequences [ 17 ].…”
