Phylogeny and biogeography of Polygala (Polygalaceae)

Abstract: We estimated phylogenetic relationships of Polygala inferred from nrITS, matK-trnK, trnL intron, trnL-trnF intergenic spacer, and rbcL sequence data, with emphasis on the New World clade. Our results did not support the New World and Old World clades as sister groups in Polygala. Relationships among Polygala and allied genera are being discussed, with the recovered clades compared to those of the current taxonomic delimitations. A biogeographic analysis using an ultrametric phylogenetic tree and calibrated wit… Show more

“…Phylogenetic analysis based on chloroplast genome sequences of eleven plants from Fabales shows that P. japonica is a sister to P. tenuifolia forming monophyletic group closely related to P. fallax and P. arillata ( Figure 1 ), which is consistent with previous molecular results (Pastore et al. 2019 ).…”

“…Molecular phylogenetic studies clearly indicate Polygala to be polyphyletic (Eriksen 1993, Persson 2001, Monro 2003, Forest et al 2007) with three well supported clades, a New World clade (NWC), an Old World clade (OWC), and a third clade comprising Polygala subg. Chodatia nested separately (Pastore et al 2019, Martinez et al 2022). The OWC is the most species-rich and is distributed in Europe, Africa and Asia (Lyskov et al 2019).…”

“…Polygala is one of the most diverse genera in the family Polygalaceae and it has a nearly cosmopolitan distribution, being absent only from the Arctic and New Zealand (Cronquist 1981, Paiva 2001, Bernardi 2000, Eriksen and Persson 2007). There is no strict consensus on the number of species as the genus delimitation is still debated, but one recent evaluation accepted 552 species of Polygala (Pastore et al 2019). “…Species is the basic unit of biodiversity ( Mayr, 1982 ; Claridge et al, 1997 ; Coyne and Orr, 2004 ) and almost all the biological researches regard one or more species as their study subjects ( Guggisberg et al, 2006 ; Zheng et al, 2014 ; Pastore et al, 2019 ). Although there are at least 30 recognized concepts on species ( Wilkins, 2009 ), most of them are incomplete as they only reflect one or two characters of species.…”
