“…Bradypodion pumilum and B. occidentale live in areas near Cape Town that differ significantly in their climatic and habitat characteristics, as mentioned above (Tolley et al, 2004 Running speed was tested on a 1m long padded surface that prevented chameleons from slipping. Animals were stimulated to run maximally by tapping on the padded surface right behind them or by clapping.…”

“…Fifteen species are currently recognized, although based on recent phylogenetic work (Tolley et al 2004(Tolley et al , 2006, several others are in the process of being described (C. Tilbury, K. A. Tolley, W. R. Branch, personal communication).…”

“…Dwarf chameleons occur in a wide range of habitats, including montane and lowland rainforest, grasslands, montane and lowland Mediterranean heath and shrubby thicket (Branch 1998). I collected data for 21 populations (Table 1), which include all currently described species except B. karooicum, which is a local variant of B. ventrale (Tolley et al 2004). In addition to described species, the 21 populations include three divergent lineages (B. sp.…”

“…Their referral was thus a tentative placement of a plesiomorphic group of taxa. Subsequently, a variety of lines of evidence (Hofman et al, 1991;Bauer, 1993;Townsend & Larson, 2002;Tolley et al, 2004) have suggested that East African taxa assigned to this genus are more closely related to some taxa currently assigned to Chamaeleo sensu lato than to Southern African Bradypodion, or at least that they are not part of the same monophyletic group as the Southern African forms. We follow Klaver & Bö hme (1997) in continuing to refer these problematic East African species to Bradypodion, however, we here use the convention of quotation marks (" ") in order to clearly indicate that this is an allocation of convenience pending a more complete phylogenetic analysis and the identification of diagnostic synapomorphies.…”
