We examined the nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 gene (976 base pairs) for 279 individuals of the sable Martes zibellina (Carnivora, Mustelidae), derived from diverse areas throughout the regions of the Ural Mountains to the Russian Far East on the Eurasian continent and the peripheral peninsula (Kamchatka) and islands (Sakhalin, Hokkaido, and southern Kurils). The demographic history of the sable and its migration history to the eastern peripheral peninsula and islands were inferred using phylogeographic approaches. The analyses confirmed the previously found major lineages for the examined sables and further identified novel sublineages. Our data also support that a lineage, which is endemic to the eastern marginal islands (Sakhalin, Hokkaido, and southern Kurils), was produced by the demographic expansion of an ancestral lineage in the Eurasian continent. The most recent common ancestor of the Sakhalin, Hokkaido, and southern Kuril sables was estimated to exist during the Late Pleistocene. We also determined that another lineage exists on Sakhalin and is shared by the Far East Primorsky population. Our results indicate multiple migration events onto Sakhalin from the continent and suggest the importance of the formation of several straits to the distribution of sable lineages. Meanwhile, Kamchatka is dominated by a sole lineage which would also have followed the demographic expansion on the Eurasian continent. The Russian Far East was indicated as the source area for lineage diversifications; in this region, genetic diversity was relatively high, which is consistent with previous studies.

Two new species of the salamandrid genus Pachytriton are described from Anhui and Guangxi, China, based on molecular and morphological analyses. One of them from Huangshan, Anhui, has smaller body, longer limbs, and larger eye than the remaining congeners. The other from northeastern Guangxi possesses a larger body and head, and longer snout and tooth series than the remaining congeners. Also, we have found that two individuals of Pachytriton obtained from pet shops in Japan can represent an unnamed species, but do not describe them as new because we have no exact information on their original localities. The distribution patterns and ecological relationships among species of Pachytriton are discussed.

The reproductive system of 319 individuals of the Schrenckii salamander (Salamandrella schrenckii Strauch 1870) (synonym S. tridactyla sensu (Kuz'min et al., 2008) from a Khabarovsk population has been studied before wintering and during the spawning of animals. In the fall, all adult males had enlarged testes filled with bundles of spermatozoa and no spermatozoa in the spermaducts. Females had large pig mented ova in the ovaries and empty expanded oviducts. In the spring, only mature S. schrenckii individuals were found in the water; the entire spectrum of physiological states from the preparation for breeding to its end was noted in them. The preovulatory stage, ovulation, pregnancy, and spawning were registered in females; the predominance of spermatozoa in the testes or in spermaducts, or almost complete absence of them in the reproductive system, and different degrees of hypertrophy of spermaducts were noted in males. These differences are related to the different times of arrival of individuals to the spawning pond. The material analyzed evidences the yearly breeding of S. schrenckii. S. schrenckii differs from S. keyserlingii in the type and duration of the reproductive cycle, sizes and morphology of spermatozoa, and structure and functioning of ovaries (Saveliev et al., 1993;Kuranova and Saveliev, 2006). The majority of the reviewed characteristics of S. schrenckii are similar to those of the allied genus representatives: Hynobius nigrescens and H. retardatus (Hasumi et al., 1990;Iwasawa et al., 1992;Hasumi, 1996a).
