Alston (1925Alston ( -1967) Visionary natural products chemist and geneticist who pioneered the use of chemical data in studies of plant systematics and evolution PrefaceCertainly many of the readers of this book will remember the early developments of chemosystematics in the late 1950s. We ourselves remember the excitement of these new data bearing on plant interrelationships. The hopes were high, the techniques were rapidly evolving, the quantities of data were large, and young workers were eagerly enthusiastic. Some even went so far as to predict that chemical data would soon replace morphological information as the basis for plant classification. These overly zealous predictions did not materialize, of course, as the history of plant systematics has amply shown during the past two centuries. If there is any distinct characteristic of systematics it is synthesis, as Lincoln Constance (1964) called it, the "unending synthesis." New tools generate new data and provide insights on additional dimensions of plant relationships. This will never change-we will continue to discover new tools and new data in the years ahead, and they will continue to be incorporated into the predictive general reference system of classification.The earlier efforts in chemosystematics focused on secondary plant products: alkaloids, betacyanins, carbohydrates, cyanogenic glycosides, glucosinolates, lipids, terpenoids, and especialiy flavonoids. The latter were particularly well suited for chemosystematic investigation for several reasons: ease of isolation and characterization, small amounts of plant material needed for analysis, stability of compounds especially through routine preparation of herbarium specimens, and low cost to obtain useful information. As a result of these considerable advantages, literally thousands of studies on use of flavonoids in plant systematics have been published. Although now with the present zest for macromolecular data from DNA restriction sites and sequences, there are fewer workers and laboratories dedicated to flavonoid chemosystematic studies; twenty years ago they were the new currency of exciting data in plant systematics.Because of many workers historically interested in the sunflower family, Asteraceae (or Compositae), in part due to its large size (approximately 23,000 species;Bremer, 1994), and because hundreds of flavonoid compounds were discovered in this family, many chemosystematic investigations have been completed on various taxa. The subtribe Asterinae (Astereae, Asteraceae) includes highly variable, often polyploid species. Recent findings based on molecular methods led to revision of its volume. However, most of these studies lacked species from Eurasia, where a lot of previous taxonomic treatments of the subtribe exist. In this study we used molecular phylogenetics methods with internal transcribed spacer (ITS) as a marker to resolve evolutionary relations between representatives of the subtribe Asterinae from Siberia, Kazakhstan, and the European part of Russia. Our reconstruction revealed that a clade including all Asterinae species is paraphyletic. Inside this clade, there are species with unresolved basal positions, for example Erigeron flaccidus and its relatives. Moreover, several well-supported groups exist: group of the genera Galatella, Crinitaria, Linosyris, and Tripolium; group of species of North American origin; and three related groups of Eurasian species: typical Eurasian asters, Heteropappus group (genera Heteropappus, Kalimeris), and Asterothamnus group (genera Asterothamnus, Rhinactinidia). The results obtained confirm previous findings with notable exceptions and add important phylogenetic data for 15 previously unstudied species, 11 of which are narrow Asian endemics. Conclusions of this study clarify relations between species and genera within this subtribe. Further molecular phylogenetics analyses of the remaining Eurasian species are needed for taxonomic revision and segregation of Asterinae into several subtribes.

Summary RAPD analysis was carried out using 60 random primers to investigate molecular genetic characterization of the amphidiploid Aster microcephalus var. ovatus and its presumable diploid parents. One of the presumable parents, A. iinumae, possesses S-type karyotype consisting of shorter chromosomes, which is considered to be derived from L-type karyotype consisting of longer chromosomes, characteristic to another presumable parent, A. ageratoides. In all, 611 reproducible fragments were amplified, and the fragment-band size range was from 50 to 12000 bp in the three species. Cluster analysis of RAPD data showed that the three species had quite similar genetic distances from each other with high values. The karyotypes of both Aster ageratoides and A. microcephalus var. ovatus include a set of L-type chromosomes, and the two species possess about 100 specific RAPD bands in common. The common band number between A. ageratoides and A. microcephalus var. ovatus was quite higher than those between A. ageratoides and A. iinumae, and between A. iinumae and A. microcephalus var. ovatus. This indicates that many fragments found in the L-type chromosomes do not exist in the S-type chromosomes, which could have caused chromosome size reduction from L-type to S-type.
