Phylogenetic relationships and estimation of divergence times among Sisoridae catfishes

Abstract: Nineteen taxa representing 10 genera of Sisoridae were subjected to phylogenetic analyses of sequence data for the nuclear genes Plagl2 and ADNP and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b. The three data sets were analyzed separately and combined into a single data set to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships among Chinese sisorids. Both Chinese Sisoridae as a whole and the glyptosternoid taxa formed monophyletic groups. The genus Pseudecheneis is likely to be the earliest diverging extant genus among the Chines… Show more

“…The monosyllabicity of Sisoridae catfishes is supported. The P. kamengensis in this study and the other three selected Pareuchiloglanis fishes also form a monophyletic group, which is consistent with Yu's research results (Yu and He 2012). In addition, Pseudecheneis fishes have always been regarded as a group with an uncertain phylogenetic position in the study of Sisoridae catfishes.…”

“…As glyptosternoid fishes are mainly distributed in the Hengduan Mountains [ 5 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ], we focused on changes of the nucleotide substitution rate in the MRCA of this group. To test if positive selection may have occurred in the MRCA of this obligate high-altitude group, we compared the Ka / Ks values along the ancestral glyptosternoid branch to other branches.…”

“…For example, the genus Pseudecheneis clustered with the glyptosternoids within Guo et al, (2004, 2007) [ 3 , 6 ], but fell sister to the glyptosternoids in Guo et al, (2005) [ 4 ]. Pseudecheneis was recovered basal to all other sisorid genera by both Peng et al, (2004, 2006) and Yu & He (2012) [ 5 , 7 , 8 ]. Pareuchiloglanis was paraphyletic in Peng et al, (2006) [ 8 ], but not in Yu & He (2012) [ 7 ].…”

“…However, morphology‐based taxonomy or molecular‐based phylogeny techniques have previously failed to recognize these fishes correctly (Guo, Zhang, & He, ; Zhou, Li, & Thomson, ). Consequently, the lack of a robust phylogenetic relationship for these fishes hindered detailed research on biogeography (Guo, He, & Zhang, ; Yu & He, ), and, hence, our understanding of the evolution of Euchiloglanis species in Southwestern China. In the current study, we considered the Euchiloglanis species distributed in the Hengduan Mountain Region as a species complex, and we attempted to determine the phylogeographical patterns of Euchiloglanis within this region.…”
