PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS AMONG THE DELPHINID CETACEANS BASED ON FULL CYTOCHROME B SEQUENCES

Abstract: Complete cytochrome b gene sequences from all but one species of delphinid plus four outgroups were analyzed using parsimony, maximum likelihood, and neighbor-joining methods. The results indicate the need for systematic revision of the family; a provisional classification is presented and compared to previous studies. Among the suggested revisions are removal of Orcinus from the Globicephalinae, placement of Grampus within the Globicephalinae, removal of all Lagenorbyncbus spp. from the Delphininae, and place… Show more

“…In addition to sequences available from previous studies of cetacean molecular systematics (Milinkovitch et al 1994;Arnason & Gullberg 1996;LeDuc et al 1999), we sequenced either the ribosomal gene fragments and/or the complete cytochrome b for non-overlapping taxa. In all, we generated 44 new sequences (GenBank accession numbers AF334482^AF334525).…”

“…On the coast of Peru L. obscurus has a peak breeding period in September and October, offset by several months from the peak in the North Pacific L. obliquidens (Van Waerebeek and Read 1994). These species are sister taxa based on cranial (Miyazaki and Shikano 1997) and mtDNA characters (Cipriano 1997;LeDuc et al 1999). Divergence to the level of species is indicated by differences in reproductive phenology as well as morphologies and behaviors related to feeding (Miyazaki and Shikano 1997;Brownell and Cipriano 1999;, traits assumed here to be adaptive.…”
