Phylogenetic placements of Calathodes and Megaleranthis (Ranunculaceae): Evidence from molecular and morphological data

Abstract: Calathodes and Megaleranthis are two eastern Asian endemic genera of Ranunculaceae with controversial tribal position and/or taxonomic status. In this study, we used matK sequences to determine the tribal position of Calathodes and Megaleranthis within the family, and three molecular loci (matK, trnL‐F, ITS) and morphological data to further clarify their phylogenetic relationships and taxonomic status. All analyses show that Calathodes and Megaleranthis belong in the tribe Adonideae, and that Calathodes is mo… Show more

“…The tribe Ranunculeae consists of 19 genera with approximately 650 species (Tamura, ; Emadzade et al, ); most of these genera are monotypic or internationally disjunctly distributed. Various DNA sequence datasets have been used in elucidating phylogenetic relationships within the tribe, including nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) (Hörandl et al, ; Hoot et al, ), cp matK (Lehnebach et al, ; Wang et al, ), combined ITS and matK / trnK (Paun et al, ; Gehrke & Linder, ; Hoffmann et al, ), and combined ITS and matK / trnK and psbJ‐petA (Emadzade et al, , ; Emadzade & Hörandl, ). Emadzade & Hörandl () also provided a hypothesis on the biogeographic history of Ranunculeae at the generic level.…”

“…The existing family‐level phylogenetic analyses are surprisingly sparse, often have poor taxon sampling and are based on a single gene only (e.g. Ro et al ., ; Cai et al ., ; Wang et al ., ), which may compromise the current taxonomies, although these issues have recently been addressed by Cossard et al . ().…”

“…of subfamily Helloboroideae Hutch (Tamura, , , ), or tribe Trollieae Langlet of subfamily Helloboroideae (Wang, ). However, the molecular phylogenetic studies showed a relatively isolated position of Caltha in Ranunculaceae and that its sister genus was not inferred with certainty (Hoot, ; Jensen et al, ; Johansson, ; Kosuge et al, ; Ro et al, ; Wang et al, , , ), and the tribe Caltheae Bercht. & J. Presl.…”
