Phylogenetic diversity of isolates belonging to genera Geobacillus and Aeribacillus isolated from different geothermal regions of Turkey

Abstract: The phylogenetic diversity of 31 thermophilic bacilli belonging to genera Geobacillus and Aeribacillus were investigated which were isolated from various geothermal sites of Turkey. Twenty-seven of these isolates were found to be belonged within the genus Geobacillus, whereas 4 of them were identified as Aeribacillus pallidus. The comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses revealed that the A. pallidus isolates displayed sequence similarity values from 98.0 to 99.6% to their closest relative. Furthermore, Geo… Show more

“…The bacterial isolates were Gram positive, displaying varia tion in their cell morphology, cell size and arrange ments (Table 1). Similar studies have been reported on the culture dependent diversity by Cihan et al (2012), where the bacterial isolates, belonging to the genus Geobacillus, grew between 50 and 70°C and also dis played Gram positive or Gram variable features, endospore formation, catalase activity and motility (Cihan et al, 2012).…”

“…This approach includes the phenotypic and genotypic information, based on various molecular fingerprint ing methods to generate various clusters of the bacte ria, belonging to the same genus (Vaneechoutte et al, 1992;Cihan et al, 2012;. Presently, RFLP 16S rDNA is recognized as a powerful and rapid method to identify relatives of a large number of the newer isolates (Vinuesa et al, 2005); (Appunu et al, 2008).…”

“…This high 16S rDNA similarity is characteristic of this relatively recently characterized genus [37] that includes species with promising biotechnological potential [38]. Members of geobacilli have been reported to represent the majority of the species that inhabit a variety of diverse “hot” environments such as marine thermal vents [39, 40], high temperature oil fields [37], hot springs [41], geothermal regions [42], and sugar refinery wastewaters [43]. …”
