The tribe Riorajini is composed of four species, Rioraja agassizii, Atlantoraja castelnaui, A. cyclophora and A. platana, which are endemic to the inshore waters of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Previous studies have hypothesized the monophyly of this group but interrelationships within its members remain not fully understood. In this study, we analysed quantitative as well as qualitative morphological characters related to external morphology, squamation, neurocranium, visceral arches, pectoral and pelvic girdles and claspers, totalizing 82 characters, representing a greater number than previously used in studies focused on rajiform systematics. 24 terminal taxa were included, and two different analyses were carried out testing Narcine brasiliensis and Pseudobatos horkelii as roots of the cladogram. The monophyly of Riorajini is supported by five quantitative and three discrete characters, including a caudal length smaller than disc length, sensory pores and mucous canals darkly pigmented on ventral surface of disc, and preorbital flange present. Clasper morphology was phylogenetically informative since it contributes to diagnose Rioraja in which an accessory terminal 2 cartilage is absent and to support a sister relationship between A. cyclophora + A. platana. Squamation, teeth and neurocranial morphology need to be thoroughly investigated in order to revise their terminology, propose and test hypotheses of homology and improve our knowledge on morphological variation regarding ontogeny and sexual dimorphism.

Climatic changes are disrupting distribution patterns of populations through shifts in species abiotic niches and habitat loss. The abiotic niche of marine benthic taxa such as skates, however, may be more climatically stable compared to the upper layers of the water column, which are more exposed to immediate impacts of warming. Here, we estimate climate change impacts in Riorajini, a tribe of four skates, as a proxy to evaluate the vulnerability of a temperate coastal zone in the Atlantic Southwest, and study niche dynamics in a scenario of environmental changes on this group of threatened species. We modelled each species’ abiotic niche under present climatic conditions (2000–2014), projected them to the future (2100), then measured distributional stability, expansion, and unfilling. Our results revealed abiotic stability between the scenarios modelled despite the advancement of climate change, suggesting that the benthic layers where these skates occur may be a refuge from the increasing thermal stress. However, the exposure of shallow waters to climate change may be detrimental to nursery habitats. Thus, although their abiotic niche may remain stable in the future, the loss of extension of occurrence might be a peril for them with climate change.

The geographical distribution of plants is influenced by macroclimate and dispersal limitations, which have led to lineage isolation and subsequent diversification within and across various environmental gradients. Macroclimatic variables in coastal wetlands influence plant species and lineages across biogeographical boundaries. This study aimed to determine the influence of macroclimatic variables on species and phylogenetic richness in South African estuaries. Open-source chloroplast DNA barcoding sequences, species distribution and climatic data layers were used to determine the relationship between species richness, MPD, MNTD and each bioclimatic variable individually. Temperate species richness and phylogenetic diversity were positively correlated with temperature bioclimatic variables whereas subtropical and tropical species were associated with increases in precipitation. Phylogenetic niche conservatism is evident in malvids and rosids which are restricted to tropical and subtropical regions due to their physiological adaptations to tropical climates. Caryophylales was mostly associated with temperate regions. Poales and Alismatales showed wide distributions that is likely attributed to traits related to wind pollination and hydrochory, rapid, clonal, and high reproductive output, tolerance to stressful conditions, and intraspecific genetic diversity. The findings highlight the importance of considering macroclimate and phylogenetic factors in understanding the distribution and diversity of coastal wetland plants.
