Phylogenetic analysis of the genus Petunia (Solanaceae) based on the sequence of the Hf1 gene

Abstract: Polymerase chain reaction fragment length polymorphisms and nucleotide sequences for a cytochrome P450 gene encoding flavonoid-3',5'-hydroxylase, Hf1, were studied in 19 natural taxa of Petunia. Natural Petunia taxa were classified into six groups based on major insertion or deletion events that occurred only in intron II of the locus. The maximum parsimony method was used to calculate strict consensus trees based on nucleotide sequences in selected regions of the Hf1 locus. Petunia taxa were divided into two … Show more

“…We attempted to detect intact Hf1 genes of these putative historical parents, Hf1a and Hf1i, among current commercial petunias. The natural species of the genus Petunia were classified into six groups, according to the indels in the intron II sequences (Chen et al 2007). Hf1a was characterized by an approximately 2.1-kbp DNA fragment amplified from intron II (Fig.…”

“…In a phylogenetic study of natural taxa of Petunia based on the Hf1 sequence (Chen et al 2007), all the five nucleotides assigned to 'A' provided parsimony information for the formation of a clade with 100% bootstrap support including group 6 species such as AXI and PRD (Table 3). This clade was separated from another clade that included group 1 species such as INT and INF.…”
