Phylogenetic analyses of nucleotide sequences confirm a unique plant intercontinental disjunction between tropical Africa, the Caribbean, and the Hawaiian Islands

Abstract: Phylogenetic analyses of nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacers and 5.8 regions of the nuclear ribosomal DNA and of the trnH-psbA spacer of the chloroplast genome confirm that the three taxa of the Jacquemontia ovalifolia (Choicy) Hallier f. complex (Convolvulaceae) form a monophyletic group. Levels of nucleotide divergence and morphological differentiation among these taxa support the view that each should be recognized as distinct species. These three species display unique intercontinental… Show more

“…Sister groups that are disjunct between the Caribbean and Pacific are apparently rare and have been correlated with the formation of the Isthmus (Namoff et al . , ), including the effects on global climate and air and oceanic currents. In angiosperms, this disjunction is exemplified in Darwiniothamnus Harling and Erigeron L. (Andrus et al .…”

“…Curiously both analyses suggest the ancestral area to be East Africa (DISC), or from somewhere along the arid corridor between present-day Namibia and Tanzania (RRW) rather than coastal areas. Similar relationships between the West Indies and tropical wet Africa have been postulated for mosses (Gradstein et al, 1983), and vascular plants (Givnish et al, 2004;Namoff et al, 2010), but to our knowledge this is the first case of a direct relationship between the Caribbean and non-tropical wet Africa.…”

“…Three closely re lated species of Jacquemontia Choicy (Convolvulaceae) have a similar distribution with J. obcordata (Millsp.) House found in eastern Mexico and the Antilles, J. ovalifolia (Choicy) Hallier f. from eastern and western Africa, and J. sandwicensis A.Gray endemic to Hawaii (Namoff & al., 2010).…”
