Phylodynamics of major CRF01_AE epidemic clusters circulating in mainland of China

Abstract: As the most dominant HIV-1 strain in China, CRF01_AE needs to have its evolutionary and demographic history documented. In this study, we provide phylogenetic analysis of all CRF01_AE pol sequences identified in mainland China. CRF01_AE sequences were collected from the Los Alamos HIV Sequence Database and the local Chinese provincial centers of disease control and prevention. Phylogenetic trees were constructed to identify major epidemic clusters. Bayesian coalescent-based method was used to reconstruct the t… Show more

“…A greater number of MSM were observed within clusters and linked with other high-risk populations [64]. Several other large-scale studies have also demonstrated multiple epidemic clusters responsible for 85% of the total CRF01_AE infections in China [65], among which two large clusters were found with high prevalence among MSM [57,58]. These findings all suggest that MSM are at higher risk than others in the population and highlight the importance of MSM-focused interventions for the control of HIV in China.…”

“…CRF01_AE, CRF_BC and Subtype B/B' are most prevalent in Mainland China (Su et al, 2014), and CRF01_AE has recently replaced subtype B as the dominant circulating subtype among Chinese MSM (Zhang et al, 2015). A number of detailed phylogenetic analyses revealed that several major transmission clusters of HIV-1 CRF01_AE existed and expanded after their multiple introductions into China (Abubakar et al, 2013;Feng et al, 2013;Peng et al, 2015;Zeng et al, 2016;Wang et al, 2017). Three of them were prevalent among heterosexuals and IDUs (CN.01AE.HST/IDU-1/2/3 clusters), and two were related to MSM transmission (CN.01AE.MSM-4/5 clusters) (Feng et al, 2013).…”

“…CRF01_AE accounts for about 80% of CRFs in southeast and east Asia, and it increased consistently in east Asia between 2010 to 2015 [7]. In China, CRF01_ AE is one of the main epidemic strains of HIV-1, accounting for 42.5% of the reported HIV-1 infection cases in China according to a systematic review [15], and multiple lineages of CRF01_AE have been reported to be transmitted in China [16,17].…”
