Phototunable memories and reconfigurable logic applications based on natural melanin

Abstract: The saturation of Moore’s law and the finality of Dennard scaling mark the requirements for new data-storage approaches employing different physical mechanisms. Due to the low operation voltage, multibit storage...

“…As the most representative compound to natural melanin, polydopamine (PDA) due to its unique chemical structure and physical characteristics has aroused great interest for various outstanding properties, such as broadband spectral absorption, metal chelation, , antioxidation, and photothermal conversion. Particularly, the outstanding light absorption property and nonradiative-dominated exciton decay process of PDA are greatly beneficial for solar energy collection and utilization. However, the absorption decay phenomenon across 200–1400 nm, especially for the visible light, severely hindered the utilization for solar energy. Actually, our group reported our first work to enhance the visible light absorption of PDA by forming conjugated microstructures in PDA through aminoxyl oxidation. However, because the strong oxidative properties of aminoxyl radicals may damage the internal structure of PDA, we still need more kinds of engineering strategies under mild conditions .…”

“…The device can achieve switchable NAND and NOR operations. [ 17 ] However, protein‐based artificial synapses with stable synaptic performances, particularly LTD/LTP for neuromorphic computing, have yet to come. Egg albumen has been employed to develop memristor devices due to its easy extraction, high transparency, easy processing, low cost, and excellent dielectric properties.…”

“…Now, the chemical or enzymatic oxidation products formed from the small neurotransmitter molecule DA further undergo aggregation through covalent or noncovalent interactions to produce polymeric structures, called polydopamine (polyDopa or PDA). This polymeric nanomaterial, PDA, possesses melanin-like structures, and thus it is often termed as synthetic melanin. Now, the natural pigments, melanins, are generally dark polymeric materials, having structural and biological heterogeneity and a wide range of applications. Consequently, PDA with melanin-type characteristics acquires almost similar types of applications in the fields of both biomedicine , and optoelectronics , and therefore becomes one of the most promising nanomaterials to be disclosed. However, its almost nonfluorescent nature and extremely insignificant fluorescence quantum yield restrict its use as a conventional bioimaging agent.…”
