Phototransformation of 1,4-naphthoquinone in aqueous solution

Abstract: The phototransformation of 1,4-naphthoquinone (NQ) in aqueous solution has been investigated by means of product studies and nanosecond laser flash photolysis (lambdaexc = 355 nm). The quantum yield of NQ phototransformation at 313 nm is high in acidic media (0.85 +/- 0.08 at pH 2.4), and decreases dramatically when the pH is increased. The main photoproducts are 1,4-dihydroxynaphthalene and 5- and 7-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone. Several transient species were detected by laser flash photolysis. The triplet (lam… Show more

“…Carbaryl, a structurally resembling compound to GNaa upon electron ejection using laser flash photolysis, produces the radical cation with three absorption maxima. [31] The observed absorption spectrum with GNaa is in good agreement with the reported spectrum using the laser studies. In addition, the absorption at 700 nm is unlikely from the e aq À because it has a high reactivity with S 2 O 8 2À (because the rate is found to be diffusion controlled).…”

“…Among these various methods, photochemical treatment using solar light appears to be a promising technique, which has been the subject of intensive studies [1][2][3][4][5]. It has emerged as an important tool of decontamination because of its low cost and its large scale of use.…”

“…The UV-VIS spectrum recorded for the RB81 solution after the electrooxidation at 0.6 V, shows one additional band of the absorption at the wavelength of 356 nm. This band can be attributed to the formation of cation-radical as the reaction product [34]. A decrease in the absorbance in the UV region proves mineralization of the dye solution.…”
