The latitudinal variation in the photosynthesis‐irradiance (P‐E) relationship of phytoplankton was investigated across a cyclonic eddy in the Antarctic Divergence zone along the 140°E longitude. Both the maximum photosynthetic rate (P*max) and maximum light utilization coefficient (α*) were lower at stations within the eddy as compared with those in the continental shelf‐slope area and the offshore area. The low‐density water mass of the eddy prevented the upward and horizontal supply of macronutrients and micronutrients, which likely resulted in a reduction of P*max and α*. In contrast, both P*max and α* were large and variable in the slope area, probably owing to a local stability resulting from the less‐saline surface water. The present study indicates the possibility that longitudinal variations in the latitudinal pattern of meanders, eddies, seasonal sea‐ice extent, and topographical conditions significantly influence the mesoscale variations in the P‐E parameters and primary production in the Southern Ocean.

During the cruise ECOANTAR 94 photosynthesis versus irradiance relationships, phytoplankton spectral absorption, quantum yield of carbon fixation, and water column light regime were determined in the eastern Bransfield Strait and surrounding areas of the Weddell Sea and Weddell-Scotia Confluence, to determine if photosynthesis is light limited in these areas. There were no significant differences in the light-saturated chlorophyll-specific rate of photosynthesis (P ), light-limited slope (␣ B ), light saturation parameter (E kPAR ), and the maximum quantum yield B m ( m ) between surface and subsurface water for several water masses in the area, which indicates that the photosynthetic response in the upper mixed layer was uniform. There were also no significant differences between the spectral light saturation parameter (E kPUR ) and the mean absorbed irradiance by phytoplankton in the upper mixed layer (E umlPUR ). These similarities suggest that phytoplankton photosynthesis was not light limited in this Antarctic region during the cruise period. This was also affirmed by the fact that the average operational quantum yield of the water column (0.03 mol C [mol photons] Ϫ1 ) was half of the mean maximum quantum yield (0.06 mol C [mol photons] Ϫ1 ). Primary production is underestimated by 24% when broadband models are compared with spectral ones. These results have important implications for the modeling of carbon flows in the Southern Ocean.

Photosynthetic parameters and community respiration were measured throughout 3 seasons at 8 stations in central and western Long Island Sound during 2002 and 2003. Light-dark bottle oxygen change was measured in a photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) series for water from the mixed layer, and respiration was measured for surface, pycnocline, and near bottom water. P-I curves were fitted numerically to calculate biomass-specific rates of maximum photosynthesis at light saturation (P B m ), photosynthetic efficiency at low irradiance (α B ) and plankton community respiration (R c ). The temporal and spatial variability of these fitted parameters, the derived parameter I k , and the concentration of phytoplankton pigments were described in relation to each other and to environmental factors. Concentrations of chlorophyll (chl) and phaeopigments (phaeo), and R c reached maxima in summer and significantly decreased seaward along the length of the Sound.
