In order to explore ontogenetic variation in leaf-level physiological traits of Betula pendula trees, we measured changes in mass-(A mass ) and area-based (A area ) net photosynthesis under light-saturated conditions, mass-(RS mass ) and area-based (RS area ) leaf respiration, relative growth rate, leaf mass per area (LMA), total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC), and macro-and micronutrient concentrations. Expanding leaves maintained high rates of A area , but due to high growth respiration rates, net CO 2 fixation occurred only at irradiances >200 µmol photons m -2 s -1 . We found that full structural leaf development is not a necessary prerequisite for maintaining positive CO 2 balance in young birch leaves. Maximum rates of A area were realized in late June and early July, whereas the highest values of A mass occurred in May and steadily declined thereafter. The maintenance respiration rate averaged ≈8 nmol CO 2 g -1 s -1 , whereas growth respiration varied between 0 and 65 nmol CO 2 g -1 s -1 . After reaching its lowest point in mid-June, leaf respiration increased gradually until the end of the growing season. Mass and area-based dark respiration were significantly positively correlated with LMA at stages of leaf maturity, and senescence. Concentrations of P and K decreased during leaf development and stabilized or increased during maturity, and concentrations of immobile elements such as Ca, Mn and B increased throughout the growing season. Identification of interrelations between leaf development, CO 2 exchange, TNC and leaf nutrients allowed us to define factors related to ontogenetic variation in leaf-level physiological traits and can be helpful in establishing periods appropriate for sampling birch leaves for diagnostic purposes such as assessment of plant and site productivity or effects of biotic or abiotic factors.

Photosynthetic rates and related anatomical characteristics of leaves developed at three levels of irradiance (1200, 300 and 80 umol · m(-2) · s(-1)) were determined in the C4-like species Flaveria brownii A.M. Powell, the C3-C4-intermediate species F. linearis Lag., and the F1 hybrid between them (F. brownii × F. linearis). In the C3-C4 and F1 plants, increases in photosynthetic capacity per unit leaf area were strongly correlated with changes in mesophyll area per unit leaf area. The C4-like plant F. brownii, however, showed a much lower correlation between photosynthetic capacity and mesophyll area per unit leaf area. Plants of F. brownii developed at high irradiance showed photosynthetic rates per unit of mesophyll cell area 50% higher than those plants developed at medium irradiance. These results along with an increase in water-use efficiency are consistent with an increase of C4 photosynthesis in high-irradiance-grown F. brownii plants, whereas in the other two genotypes such plasticity seems to be absent. Photosynthetic discrimination against (13)C in the three genotypes was less at high than at low irradiance, with the greatest change occurring in F. brownii. Discrimination against (13)C expressed as δ (13)C was linearly correlated (r (2) = 0.81; P<0.001) with the ratio of bundle-sheath volume to mesophyll cell area when all samples from the three genotypes were combined. This tissue ratio increased for F. brownii and the F1 hybrid as growth irradiance increased, indicating a greater tendency towards Kranz anatomy. The results indicated that F. brownii had plasticity in its C4-related anatomical and physiological characteristics as a function of growth irradiance, whereas plasticity was less evident in the F1 hybrid and absent in F. linearis.

Three species of the C 4 grass genus Muhlenbergia-M.frondosa, M. sobolifera, and Af. schreberi-were collected from forest understory habitats in Kansas and grown in a growth chamber at 1,500, 150, and 15-25 |xmol m" 2 s" 1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). Assimilation (A), conductance to C0 2 , intercellular C0 2 concentration, chlorophyll (chl) concentrations, and photosystem I electron-transport capacity were determined and compared with results for Af. cuspidata, which occurs only in open, prairie areas. All of the shade species exhibited more shade tolerance than the prairie species: they had lower maximum A, saturation of A, and photosystem I electron transport with respect to PPFD, higher quantum yields that increased with decreasing growth PPFD, and increasing chl concentrations with decreasing PPFD.
