Photosynthesis, carbon acquisition and primary productivity of phytoplankton: a review dedicated to Colin Reynolds

Abstract: The review intends to give an overview on developments, success, results of photosynthetic research and on primary productivity of algae both freshwater and marine with emphasis on more recent discoveries. Methods and techniques are briefly outlined focusing on latest improvements. Light harvesting and carbon acquisition are evaluated as a basis of regional and global primary productivity and algal growth. Thereafter, long-time series, remote sensing and river production are exemplified and linked to the poten… Show more

“…Here we provide primary production estimates in the GG based on dilution experiments. This technique has been already used in various marine systems, and has shown production rates that are similar to those measured by 14 C method (Moigis and Gocke 2003;Meddeb et al 2018;Dokulil and Qian 2021). Nutrients were not added to dilution bottles, assuming high nutrient concentrations in the GG during our study period.…”

“…This result confirmed the higher sensitivity of the molecular response in comparison to physiological endpoints and its relevance for the early detection of potential impairment of such process (Kluender et al 2008, Pino-Otín et al 2019). Since photosynthesis is directly linked to autotroph growth and primary production, its long-term disruption might lead to impairment of biofilm structure and function and further at the ecosystem level (Dokulil and Qian 2021). Thus, the early detection and further prediction of such disruption are of major concern.…”

“…Photosynthetic organisms release carbon dioxide during respiration, resulting in a net photosynthetic fixation of inorganic carbon in autotrophic biomass [10,5]. Net primary production (NPP)is calculated by subtracting the value of carbon losses owing to autotrophic respiration (algae respiration) from GPP [13][14][15].…”
