“…Carbon assimilation and partitioning is a complex process involving the photosynthetic capacity of the foliage canopy (Dwelle ef a)., 1981: Moll, 1983, source-sink interactions (Norsberger & Humphries, 1965;Moorby, 1968;Sale, 1974) and hormonal regulation (Wyse, Daie & Saftner, 1980). While canopy structure and duration of the leaf area have been demonstrated to be important components of carbon assimilation (Bremner & Taha, 1966;MacKerron & Waister, 1983;Hawkins, 1982), the results of this study suggest that visual estimation of gross size and shape of potato canopies is not necessarily related to tuber yield.…”

“…The vine growth of clones is generally only used to eliminate clones with late maturity, since this is associated with negative harvest characteristics such as immature stolons and difficulty with vine desiccation. Variation in photosynthetic rates among potato clones is well documented (Moll, 1983;Dwelle, Hurley & Pavek, 1983). Photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area is, however, not the sole determinant of yield, and single factor measures of short-term photosynthetic productivity are often poorly correlated with yield (Dwelle et al, 1981).…”
