Photostimulated luminescence in Eu-doped fluorochlorozirconate glass ceramics

Abstract: We report the synthesis of Eu2+- and chlorine-doped fluorozirconate glass-ceramics that show an intense photostimulated luminescence (PSL) after x-ray irradiation at room temperature. The PSL efficiency is up to 80% of that found in the well-known crystalline x-ray storage phosphor BaFBr:Eu2+, and it is the largest thus far reported for a glass-ceramic. We attribute the PSL to crystallites of orthorhombic BaCl2 that are formed after annealing above the glass temperature. Hexagonal BaCl2 crystallites are also o… Show more

“…Trivalent rareearth ions Er 3+ -and Tm 3+ -doped phosphate, silicate, germanate and tellurite glasses have been developed for infrared active optical devices [5][6][7][8][9]. Recently, research focus on rare-earth doped glasses is not limited to infrared optical devices, and there is a growing interest in visible optical devices [10][11][12][13][14]. rare-earth ions, such as Sm 3+ and Eu 3+ ions, are becoming more significant [15][16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…Trivalent rare-earth ions Er and Tm doped phosphate, silicate, gemanite and tellurite glasses have been developed for infrared active optical devices [4][5][6][7][8]. Recently, research focus on rare-earth doped glasses is not limited to infrared optical devices, and there is a growing interest in visible optical devices [9][10]. With the increasing demand of various visible lasers and light sources, further investigations in other rare-earth ions, such as Dy, Tb, Sm and Eu ions, are becoming more important [11][12][13][14][15][16][17].…”

“…Eu-activated BaCl 2 and fluorochlorozirconate glass-ceramics with photostimulated luminescence (PSL)-active BaCl 2 nano-particles are very efficient X-ray storage phosphors [1,2]. The nano-crystallites are formed after heating the quenched glass above the glass temperature T g .…”
