Photoprotective and toxicological activities of extracts from the Antarctic moss Sanionia uncinata

Abstract: Background:The Antarctic moss Sanionia uncinata (Hedw.) “…The preparation of sunscreens based exclusively on natural extracts must contain very high concentrations of such active substances to obtain the desired photoprotection; however, several studies have shown that the advantage of using these compounds in photoprotective formulations is due to the synergistic effect they produce when associated with organic filters. All the studies mentioned above had an increase in SPF by incorporating extracts with chemical filters, the aqueous extract from Antarctic moss Sanionia uncinata , demonstrated an increase in SPF from 11 (chemical filter only) to 14.7 (chemical filter with extract) (41).
