Photoproduction of Neutral Rho Mesons from Complex Nuclei

Abstract: We present results of measurements on photoproduction of p mesons. Analysis of 10 6 measured p events in a four-dimensional data matrix da(A,m ,p 9 t ± )/d$ldm with dimensions 14x20x10x20 yields precise information on nuclear density distributions for p production. We obtain for the Woods-Saxon radii R{A) = (1.12 ± 0.02)A l/3 and, using the vector dominance model, a N = 26.7 ±2.0 mb and y 2 /47r = 0.57 ±0.10. tion per nucleon |/ 0 | 2 . This yields a pJv and y p 2 / 477 = (a/6477)(a p7V 2 /|/ 0 | 2 ) in a self… Show more

“…An alternative method to study the ω self energy in nuclei is an attenuation measurement of the ω flux in ω photoproduction off nuclei. Already in early experiments on the ρ meson properties in nuclei [17] this method has been used to yield the first extraction of the ρN cross section from photoproduction experiments on nuclei. More recently, the authors of [18] haven taken this up for the case of φ photoproduction.…”

“…[6] have pointed out that there is a possibility to study at least the imaginary part of the φ self energy in nuclei by an attenuation measurement of the φ flux in nuclear φ photoproduction. This is a method that has been used already in early experiments on the ρ meson properties in nuclei [11] and has led there to the first extraction of the ρN cross section from photoproduction experiments. For the φ meson this suggestion has been taken up by a nuclear φ photoproduction experiment at SPring8/Osaka that is optimized to measure φ mesons under forward angles by detecting the K + K − decay channel [12].…”

“…In the very same spirit as in [11] for the case of ρ photoproduction in nuclei the authors of [12] used a simple Glauber formula in order to extract the total φN cross section from the measured nuclear φ photoproduction cross sections. To this end nuclear effects as Fermi motion, Pauli blocking, quasi elastic scattering, etc.…”

“…In column 5 we show this last model with regenerative contributions omitted. In this case this model is easily shown to reduce to the Glauber theory with an "optical" approximation -i.e., the approximation in which one ignores the q2 dependence of the nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering amplitude when compared to that of the nuclear form factor Nuclear radii deduced from p photoproduction [22] have been used in this last model. The electromagnetic radii would yield cross sections Table 2 A comparison of our measured total cross sections at 26.5 GeV/c (column 1) with those calculated from several theories (columns 2-5).…”
