Photopolymerization of Reactive Amphiphiles: Automatic and Robust Vertical Alignment Layers of Liquid Crystals with a Strong Surface Anchoring Energy

Abstract: A photopolymerizable itaconic acid-based amphiphile (abbreviated as Ita3C 12 ) consisting of a hydrophilic carboxylic acid, three alkyl tails, and a reactive vinyl function was newly designed and synthesized for the formation of automatic and robust vertical alignment (VA) layer of nematic liquid crystals (NLC). Since a hydrophilic carboxylic acid was chemically attached to the end of Ita3C 12 , the Ita3C 12 amphiphiles initially dissolved in the host NLC medium were migrated toward the substrates for the cons… Show more

“…The uniform protrusions of self‐assembled C 60 NS initially induced the homeotropic anchoring of nearby LC molecules, with all LC molecules subsequently standing perpendicular to the substrate surface. To examine the physical interactions between C 60 NS monolayer and LC molecules, the surface anchoring energy ( W ) was investigated by the high E field techniques of the optical cell . From the slope of the graph in Figure d, the W is determined to be 8.97 × 10 −5 J m −2 by substituting the elastic constant of LC and the cell gap.…”

“…Polyimides which is thermally and chemically stable polymers have been generally used as planar as well as vertical alignment materials. However, the polyimide-type alignment materials exhibit several drawbacks such as long process time, low yield, low processability, and high cost [2]. Therefore, various research activities using a system without a polyimide alignment layer have been performed, such as research on hydrocarbon silane, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, and other materials [3][4][5].…”
