Heterogeneous photocatalyst materials for water splitting

This critical review shows the basis of photocatalytic water splitting and experimental points, and surveys heterogeneous photocatalyst materials for water splitting into H2 and O2, and H2 or O2 evolution from an aqueous solution containing a sacrificial reagent. Many oxides consisting of metal cations with d0 and d10 configurations, metal (oxy)sulfide and metal (oxy)nitride photocatalysts have been reported, especially during the latest decade. The fruitful photocatalyst library gives important information on factors affecting photocatalytic performances and design of new materials. Photocatalytic water splitting and H2 evolution using abundant compounds as electron donors are expected to contribute to construction of a clean and simple system for solar hydrogen production, and a solution of global energy and environmental issues in the future (361 references).

Incorporation of nanoparticles in the extraframework of MCM-41 and its effect on the photocatalytic degradation of phenol has been studied. Mesoporous MnO 2 nanoparticles (meso-MnO 2 NPs) are incorporated in situ into the extraframework of MCM-41 during its synthesis to obtain mesoporous MnO 2 NPs−MCM-41(MM) materials. Three samples of mesoporous MnO 2 NPs−MCM-41 have been prepared with Si/Mn ratios 10, 50, and 90. The sample with Si/Mn ratio 10 shows better textural properties compared to the other two samples. Formation of mesoMnO 2 NPs, reversible coordination of Mn ⇄ Si, and formation the Femodified MM-10 nanocomposite (mesoporous Fe@MM−10 NC) are the crucial steps involved in the present investigation. The role of CTAB, NH 3 , and (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 are the key ingredients for the fabrication of mesoMnO 2 NPs and mesoporous Fe@MM−10 NC. The materials are characterized by LXRD, N 2 sorption, and HRTEM to evaluate the mesoporosity, morphology, and textural properties. Mesoporous Fe@MM−10 NC was treated as an efficient photocatalyst for degradation of phenolic compounds, an exemplary move. Nearly 100% degradation of concentrated phenolic compounds (100 mg L −1 ) has been achieved within 45 min by mesoporous 5Fe@MM−10 NC. Intraparticle mesoporosity, small particle sizes of the nanocomposite, the formation of a large number of • OH radicals, and the generation of high photocurrent are important factors for swift degradation of phenolic compounds by mesoporous 5Fe@MM−10 NC material.

Heterogeneous photocatalysis is an advanced oxidation process which has been the subject of a huge amount of studies related to air cleaning and water purification. All these processes have been carried out mainly by using TiO(2)-based materials as the photocatalysts and ca. 75% of the articles published in the last 3 years is related to them. This review illustrates the efforts in the search of alternative photocatalysts that are not based on TiO(2), with some exceptions concerning particularly innovative modifications as nanoassembled TiO(2) or TiO(2) composites with active carbon, graphite and fullerene. Papers reporting preparation, characterization and testing of binary, ternary and quaternary compounds, have been reviewed. Despite many of these photocatalysts being effective for the photodecomposition of many pollutants, most of them do not allow a complete mineralization of the starting compounds, differently from TiO(2).
