Photonic THz Generation using Optoelectronic Oscillator-driven Optical Frequency Comb Generator

Abstract: We propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic THz signal generation technique combining a discrete optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) and optical frequency comb (OFC) generator. Using a microwave photonic filter (MWPF), we generate an electrical oscillation up to 18.36 GHz with a phase noise of-103 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset frequency. The OEO frequency tunability is obtained by changing the bandwidth of a tunable optical band pass filter (TOBF). This can produce an electrical RF carrier from 6.58-18.36 GHz. … Show more

“…WSSs have been widely used for the purpose of isolating spectral lines generated by an OFCG [10,11,12], as they can effectively reroute the optical signal and obtain as many isolated channels as output channels available in the device. Conventional WSSs have a 90%-to-10% transition resolution over 15 GHz, however, recent studies have proved the transmission of a 10-port VIPA-based WSS with a 3 GHz 90%-to-10% [10], which would multiply by five the number of output channels available.…”

“…There are some more recent developments in the use of OEOs in various applications. One example of this is terahertz (THz) photonic signal generation using an OEO [47][48][49]. Another possible application of an OEO is to use it as a local oscillator (LO) in the central office of a 5G radio access network (RAN) [50][51][52].…”

“…The self-oscillating OFCG reported in [14] and [15] lacks the frequency tunability of a conventional OEO and hence the mm-wave and THz signal frequency can only be tuned by changing the selected lines spacing. Recently in [17], we experimentally demonstrated the photonic generation of mmwave and THz signals using a tunable OEO driven OFCG. Tunability of the OEO (over 6.58 -18.36 GHz) was achieved through the use of a microwave photonic filter (MWPF)based on the cascade of a phase modulator (PM) and tunable optical bandpass filter(TOBF) [18]; the SSB phase noise of the OEO section is below -103 dBc/Hz throughout the entire tuning range.…”
