Photonic crystal-based GE-PON triplexer using point defects

Abstract: In this paper, we newly propose an optical triplexer which is one of key components in Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network for Fiber-To-The-Home network. Based on a photonic crystal structure with local point defects, two types of optical triplexers were optimally designed. The size-tuned optical triplexer shows the extinction ratios of -17.8 dB, -14.4 dB, and -15.9 dB for the wavelengths of 1310nm, 1490nm, and 1550 nm, respectively. And the index-tuned optical triplexer shows the extinction ratios of -19… Show more

“…In recent years, many PC based optical devices have been discussed theoretically and experimentally such as add-drop filters (Qiang et al 2007;Robinson and Nakkeeran 2011b), power splitters (Nozhat and Granpayeh 2007;Ghaffari et al 2008a), channel drop filters (Hwang and Song 2005;Djavid et al 2008b;Robinson and Nakkeeran 2010), multiplexers and demultiplexers (Manzacca et al 2007;Ghaffari et al 2008b), polarization beam splitters (Liu et al 2005;Zabelin et al 2007), triplexers (Park et al 2008;Shih et al 2009), switches , directional couplers (Moghaddam et al 2010), bandstop filters (Monifi et al 2008), bandpass filters (Costa et al 2003;Chao et al 2007;Djavid et al 2008a;Robinson and Nakkeeran 2011a) and so on.…”

“…Many optical communication devices based on PhCs such as channel drop filters, power splitters, PhC coupler, and light sources are reported [11]- [15]. Particularly, the channel drop filter plays a key role in photonic integrated circuits (ICs) [15] because it integrates various functional elements, e.g., multiplexer [16], [17], switch [18], and directional coupler [19] together. Compared with conventional optical waveguide devices, PhC devices can perform the same function with their nanometric sizes, hence raising channel densities within a small chip of photonic ICs.…”
