Abstract:Photons do not carry sufficient momentum to induce indirect optical transitions in semiconducting materials, such as silicon, necessitating the assistance of lattice phonons to conserve momentum. Compared to direct bandgap semiconductors, this renders silicon a less attractive material for a wide variety of optoelectronic applications. In this work, we introduce an alternative strategy to fulfill the momentummatching requirement in indirect optical transitions. We demonstrate that when confined to scales below… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
