Photometric parameters of edge-on galaxies from 2MASS observations

Abstract: Abstract. To analyze the vertical structure of edge-on galaxies, we have used images of a large uniform sample of flat galaxies that have been taken during the 2MASS all-sky survey. The photometric parameters, such as the radial scale length, the vertical scale height, and the deprojected central surface brightness of galactic disks have been obtained. We find a strong correlation between the central surface brightness and the ratio of the vertical scale height to the vertical scale length: the thinner the gal… Show more

“…While the dust lane is evident for this nearly edge-on object in the V-band, only a weak asymmetry can be seen in the K -band for the bulge above and below the galactic plane. The K s -band value for h s derived by Bizyaev & Mitronova (2002) is consistent with the result of the present fit.…”

“…As with NGC 5746, the fit to the extinction lane in the V-band is poor, even though the global fit quality is not very different from the other objects. An estimate for h s is available for the K s -band, which is about 20% smaller than the present value (Bizyaev & Mitronova 2002). The fitted θ is consistent with the aspect of the K ring, which suggests θ = 83.5…”

“…In agreement with its identification as a superthin galaxy by Goad & Roberts (1981), the global scale height of IC 2233 is on the small end for Sd galaxies (cf. Bizyaev & Mitronova 2002;Seth et al 2005), although it is notably thicker than the more massive superthin galaxy UGC 7321 (h z ≈ 150d 10 pc; Matthews 2000). In addition, we see evidence that the stellar disk of IC 2233 flares at larger galactocentric radii (see below).…”

“…The black solid curve corresponds to the γ = 1 interpolating function and the black dashed curve to γ = 2. The green curve is the probability density of the sample of 153 galaxies from Bizyaev & Mitronova (2002). The vertical solid red line represents the value of h R /z 0 at which the sample of Mosenkov et al (2010) begins to decline from a previously flat value.…”

“…26, the posterior probability densities are plotted for the ratios of the fitted h R to z 0 for the γ = 1 and 2 interpolating functions. These are compared with data from Mosenkov, Sotnikova & Reshetnikov (2010) and Bizyaev & Mitronova (2002). From fig.…”
