The ionization of the ~nolecules ol hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen iodide, water, hydrogen sulphide, and ammonia, by essentially monoenergetic electrons, has been stitdied in a Inass spectrometer. The various excited states of the molecular ions of these compounds have been observed and the corresponding energy levels of the ions have been measured. The results are interpreted in terms of the electronic structures of these ~uolecules as given by molecular orbital theory.
