“…27,28 Here, we will therefore only summarize some of the aspects that are relevant for the present experiments. The laser setup consists of a pulsed dye laser ͑Lumonics Hyperdye-300͒ running on Coumarine 440, which is pumped by a XeCl excimer laser ͑Lambda Physik EMG103-MSC͒.…”

“…The dye laser output with a spectral bandwidth of about 0.07 cm Ϫ1 was frequency doubled using an angletuned BBO crystal in an INRAD Autotracker II unit, and focused into the ionization region of the magnetic bottle spectrometer 29 that is interfaced with a molecular beam expansion. 27 So far, we have employed this spectrometer in experiments in which an excited state is predominantly populated by absorption of more than one photon, and therefore used a lens with a focal length of 25 mm. In the present experiments one-photon excitation is used, for which a 25 mm lens gave rise too easily to saturation effects.…”

“…The setups we use have been described in great detail previously 37,38 and will therefore only be summarized briefly here. In our experiments we partly made use of samples seeded into supersonic expansions, but also performed studies using effusive beams.…”

“…At the (nϭ3) dissociation limit the closing of the parent ionization channel was observed, accompanied by the opening of the dissociation channel. This phenomenon was probed by (3ϩ1) REMPI ͑resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization͒ 9 and by ͑XUVϩvisible͒ two-frequency photoionization. 10 The theoretical framework of multichannel-quantumdefect theory ͑MQDT͒, developed to explain features of coupling to continuum states, was refined by Jungen et al to accurately reproduce the observations on states of u symmetry 11 and of g symmetry.…”
