Photoinitiated Polymerization of Cationic Acrylamide in Aqueous Solution: Synthesis, Characterization, and Sludge Dewatering Performance

Abstract: A copolymer of acrylamide (AM) with acryloyloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DAC) as the cationic monomer was synthesized under the irradiation of high-pressure mercury lamp with 2,2-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (V-50) as the photoinitiator. The compositions of the photoinduced copolymer were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), ultraviolet spectra (UV), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The effects of 6 important factors, that is, photo-initiators concentration, m… Show more

“…Although the great majority of possible applications of IL‐containing membranes are associated with electrochemistry, there are also works taking into account other eventualities. For example, the copolymer of acrylamide with acryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride obtained by photopolymerization was shown to have superior properties as a flocculant in a sludge dewatering experiment . Another flocculant was synthesized by copolymerization of acrylamide with acryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride and butyl acrylate …”

“…Monomer concentration is a critical factor in TPDA polymerization partly because the number of free radicals is determined by monomer concentration at the start of the reaction . As shown in Figure , the conversion of TPDA continuously increased in the monomer concentration range, whereas its intrinsic viscosity increased with increasing monomer concentration, peaked, and then sharply decreased.…”

“…The preparation device is the same with our previous study . The preparation of PDA was performed as follows: AM, DMD, and PAAS (mole ratio between a chain unit and DMD of 1.0) were first added to a reaction vessel made of silicate glass.…”

“…Fenton oxidation led to the degradation of EPS in the sludge and the release of EPS to the solution. Hereinto, the part of the dissolved organics was further oxidized to small molecular substances . The concentrations of protein and polysaccharide were used as an index to measure the degree of EPS degradation .…”
