Abstract: Platinum-loaded Langmuir-Blodgett and cast films of a porphyrin are prepared, and steady photoinduced hydrogen evolution is observed using both films under steady-state irradiation.

“…Both the present iridium-and rhenium-based systems display total turnover numbers higher than those reported for the other supramolecular systems including the Ru-Pt photocatalyst synthesized by Sakai et al 12 With up to 273 turnovers achieved within 13 h, corresponding to a conversion of 91% of the introduced Et 3 NH + , the stabilities of these new photocatalytic systems are comparable to or superior to those of previously reported platinum-based systems such as [Ru(4,4¢-DCIbipy) 3 ] 2+ /PtO 2 (TON = 300, 4,4¢-DCI-bipy = 4,4¢-dicarboxy-2,2¢bipyridine diisopropylester), [Ir(ppy) 2 (bipy))]/nano-Pt (TON = 63) 8 or cast films of zinc porphyrins and platinum particles (TON = 360). 13 With a 0.10-0.16 quantum yield value, these molecular systems do kinetically compete with some platinumbased systems such as ZnTMPP/MV 2+ /Pt(OH) 2 (j = 0.06) 14 or [Ru(bipy) 3 ] 2+ /MV 2+ /PtO 2 (j = 0.09), 15 with both of them being limited by the efficiency of the reduction of methyl-viologen used as an electron relay.…”

“…Platinized Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films containing freebase porphyrins produce H 2 under continuous irradiation in aqueous solutions of EDTA. 327 Hydrogen production is stable and lasts over extended reaction times (350 h). The longterm stability is postulated to stem from the inability of the colloidal Pt catalyst to coagulate owing to immobilization in the LB film.…”

“…The catalytic activity and stability of this multicomponent catalyst system can compete with some previously reported platinumbased systems. 47- 50 Similar system, based on cobalt catalyst [Co(dmgH) 2 ] and rhenium photosensitizer [Re(CO) 3 Br(bipy)], was recently described. 51 The quantum yield of hydrogen is 26 ± 2%.…”
