Photoinduced chirality in azobenzene-containing polymer systems

Abstract: In this article, we will review the phenomena on circularly-polarized-light (CPL)-induced chirality in polymeric systems with photochromophores in their side-chain or main-chain. In the side-chain polymeric systems, the photoinduced chirality arises from superstructural chirality, i.e., helix structure, via aggregating of achiral azobenzene molecules in side chains. On the other hand, in the main-chain polymeric system, the macroscopically induced chirality can originate from individual chirality of chromophor… Show more

“…The values of φ Δ lin and φ Δ cir are evaluated by fitting the experimental data with Eqs. (10) and (11). The calculated curves fit very well with the experimental results and the values of linear and circular birefringences are calculated to be Δ = × − n 4 10 lin 2 and Δ = × − n 3 10 cir 3 , respectively.…”

“…In addition to the photoinduced linear anisotropy, chiral structures, whose handedness depends on the helicity of the light, were also optically induced in some azobenzene polymer films after irradiation with a circularly or elliptically polarized light. This phenomenon, known as chiroptical switching, becomes one of the principal and intriguing functionalities in azobenzene molecular systems [10][11][12][13][14][15]. The created chiral features can strongly affect the polarization state of the light propagating through the sample [16,17].…”

“…The azobenzene photoisomerization has been introduced into the bent-core LC system as the forms of monomers and polymers [168][169][170][171][172][173][174]. Since achiral bent-core molecules can form supermolecular chirality, incorporation of azobenzene units into bent-core molecules results in interesting chirality transformation.…”

“…38,39 In these studies, rapid and reversible photoand thermo-isomerization reactions of azobenzene moieties provided a versatile photo-switchable system and further induced conformational transitions of the polymer backbone. Related studies have been summarized in a review by Choi et al 40 in 2007.…”
